Introduction to Ancient Greece

Welcome to Grade 7 History!

This year we will be exploring, researching and discussing the ancient civilisations of the Greeks, Romans and Indians. These three unique and powerful societies created concepts and invented techniques and tools that we still use today all over the world.

We start with Ancient Greece and their proud empire. Many of you have requested more information on Greek mythology, particularly the gods and the mythological creatures, therefore our second lesson will focus on this topic.

I have included some very useful and interesting links within this blog to help you gain some background knowledge. At the end of our second lesson we will be having a short quiz which will test what you have already learnt (hint, the links are extremely useful!) and what you may already know (some of the questions are quite easy).

By Week 2 of this unit, we should all have set up a Gmail account so that I can share documents, videos, images and articles with you via Google Drive (if you already have an account, then simply add it to the Google Doc during the second lesson).

For a  comprehensive timeline of Greek history, including the empire and it's collapse, you can visit this site. There are some excellent resources on the Greek gods here, here and here.

Remember, all of these sites offer a wealth of information, however it is up to you how you use it and how useful it's going to be for you. Also remember, that as historians, we can't always be 100% sure that everything we are presented with is fact. We must be able to think critically about information, analyse it, and determine whether we think it is true or not. This is helped by finding multiple sources. If a number of sources (primary or secondary) give us the same information, then there is a good chance that it may be true. However, if there are too many conflicting and contradicting perspectives regarding the same story, we must be critical about how accurate the information is.

I wish you all the best for an exciting and successful year in Grade 7 History!

Mr Simon
